AFTER SCOOPING two top tourism awards and breaking the 400,000 visitor barrier, Longleat Safari Park near Warminster has closed its gates for the winter break.
Celebrating a successful, although wet, season, the safari park has hosted several top events over the past six months.
The success story continued unabated as Longleat won the Southern Tourist Board's prize for visitor attraction of the year and was named one of the best animal attractions in the country by Which? magazine.
A family extravaganza in August attracted some of the country's top soap stars, and the house at Longleat made a star appearance in Bollywood epic Mohabbatein, which was released at cinemas last month.
There were several births in the park, including three lion cubs, a baby tapir and a 6ft baby giraffe.
Longleat is due to reopen on March 24, 2001.
