SKURRAY'S WILTSHIRE LEAGUE

ONLY three matches were scheduled in the Premier Division, leaders Devizes Town Reserves surprisingly being beaten 3-2 on their own ground by Warminster Town Reserves.

Devizes took an early lead through Lee Davis, Warminster equalising from a penalty by Gary Lewis. His first effort was well stopped by Devizes goalkeeper Jim Flippance but Lewis hit in the rebound. John Hargreaves and Graham Russell added further goals for Warminster before substitute Ashton Turner pulled a goal back to ensure an exciting end to the game.

A second half goal from Frankie Rogers gave Corsham Town Reserves a 1-0 win over Malmesbury Vics Reserves, the three points moving them off the foot of the table.

Pewsey Vale Reserves and Westbury United Reserves failed to find the net in a dour no-score draw.

In the Intermediate Division an own goal by Rob Compton enabled Burmah Castrol to run out 1-0 winners against Dunbar Westside.

Wanborough United and Stratton Crosslink drew 1-1, Paul Starkey scoring for United and Mark Richens (penalty) for Crosslink.

In an exciting ten goal thriller at Biddestone the home side and Blunsdon United shared the points in a 5-5 draw. Mark Pearce (2), Tony Kerwick (2) and Alan Farnish scored for Biddestone and Mark Hammond (2), Craig Green, Mark Gunter and Justin Twitchett for United.

Cricklade Town Reserves beat neighbours Down Ampney 3-0 in the Plaisters Auto Intermediate Cup. James Richards scored in the first minute, Chris Evans scored at the wrong end and Richards netted again in the last five minutes. Ampney goalkeeper Dexter Schofield saved his side from a heavier defeat with a string of excellent saves.

Junior Division One leaders Wroughton Reserves made up for their senior side's disappointment by running out winners at Marlborough by the day's highest score, 11-0. Ian Pickering (3), Paul Bowden (3), Steve Westall (2), Stuart Temple, Mark Love and Glenn Armstrong were the scorers.

Second placed Ashton Keynes kept in touch with a 4-0 win over Burmah Castrol Reserves, thanks to goals from Richard Blankley (3) and Martin Jackson.

A goal by Robert Griffin five minutes from time gave Ferndale Rodbourne a 3-2 win over Minety, Craig Dobson and Terry Bown the other scorers. David Lloyd and Colin Henderson were on target for Minety.

In Junior Division Two Bromham netted eight at Down Ampney, the home side scoring twice and Blunsdon United Reserves and Purton A fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw, Wayne Watts and Paul Branigan scoring for United and Mark Cutter (2) for Purton.

Dunbar Westside Reserves gained a 5-1 success over Marshfield, Don Lane (2), Alan Clark, Mike Wilson and Justin Vardnell on target for Dunbar.

Wootton Bassett United gained a 4-1 victory over Wanborough United Reserves in the second round of the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup, thanks to goals from Gary Loveday (2), Paul Simpson and Danny Groom, with Tony Fry replying for Wanborough.

In the first round of the Wilts Senior Cup Hellenic League Purton proved too strong for their Wilts League visitors Marlborough Town and ran out 5-0 winners.

Purton were soon into their stride and took the lead after just three minutes when Jimmy Wright found Richard Watkins with a neat chip and the striker ran on to score from 12 yards. They went further ahead on ten minutes when a good run and cross from Chris Ayres down the left flank was converted by Jimmy Wright.

After the interval Purton got back into their stride and scored a third on 57 minutes. A defence splitting pass from Mickey Heath found Arron Crumbie, who slipped past two defenders to score.

Jimmy Wright set up Mickey Heath on 78 minutes, Heath running clear to score a fourth with a clinical finish.

Wright was once again the provider seven minutes later, finding Johnny Coole with a good ball, the youngster scoring a fifth on his first team debut after coming on as a late substitute.

Wootton Bassett booked a place in the second round with a comfortable 6-0 victory over Hampshire League side Amesbury Town.

In a scrappy first 45 minutes Lee Stoddart gave Bassett the lead ten minutes before the break. The half-time cuppa then worked wonders for the home side, who completely dominated the second half and added five more goals through Richard Merchant, Lee Marshall, Mickey Goodwin and Nathan Hall (2), the latter spoiling a good performance by being sent off in the last five minutes.

Goals from Rob Broadbank, Martin Dunn and Rick Casey gave Stratton Crosslink a 3-0 win over Bradford Town and Shrewton United ensured a place in the draw for the second round with a 5-0 away win over Aldbourne, Dean Foot (three), Jessie Walters and Anton Brownless on target for United.
