THERE was another washout for local Hellenic clubs at the weekend.
Swindon Supermarine's third attempt to play RS Basingstoke in the first round of the Complete Music Challenge Cup was postponed and Highworth's second round tie North Leigh also fell victim of the weather.
In Division One, Purton missed a chance to register their league victory of the season when their game against Kidlington at the Red House was called off. But the team moved off the bottom of Division One without kicking a ball Ross Town replaced them after being deducted three points.
Fairford Town's challenge cup game at Didcot got the go-ahead. The home side, who are unbeaten in the league after 11 games, ran out 3-0 winners.
In a fairly even first half Fairford keeper Jamie Price saved a penalty on the half hour after a clumsy challenge by Scott Burry on the Didcot forward.
Five minutes later the home side took the lead, some slack marking in the Fairford defence allowing Marriott a free header from the corner.
Fairford kept the Didcot defence on their toes and a minute from half time a cross from John Hathaway was followed into the net by Pete Horwat but a linesman flagged for offside and the goal was disallowed.
Fairford were caught flat-footed in the first five minutes of the second half, the home side scoring twice through Brandon and Copping.
The quick strikes killed the game, although Fairford kept at it and created a few chances.
Fairford manager Mark Webb said: "The lads put in plenty of effort, performed well at times and we had our chances.
"The disallowed goal was a bit of a choker but in the end we were beaten by a better side.
Promoted to Division One of the Hellenic league this season, Malmesbury Vics were in action in the first round of the Wilts Senior Cup, beating Biddestone from the Wilts Premier League by 3-1 after extra time.
The Vics were let off the hook by Biddestone, who took the lead through Terry Smith on 15 minutes after some sloppy defending, then missed a penalty ten minutes later when Vics keeper Graham Jones saved Jamie Lyes' spot kick.
After the break Malmesbury piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser, but they had to wait until the last minute of the game. Richard Hewett sent the game into extra time with a good far-post header.
One minute into extra time Malmesbury took a 2-1 lead, with Hewett again on target after good work by Danny Beck.
With Biddestone pushing forward for an equaliser they were caught on the break and, on his debut for the club, Hewett added a third to complete his hat-trick and give his side a place in the second round draw.
Division One leaders Gloucester City, who have a 100 per cent record from 11 games in the league, gained a 5-2 away win over Henley Town in the Challenge Cup.
Two penalties from Peacey and goals from Casey, Esson and Tatton did the damage, with Maskell and Nash replying for Henley.
In the Supplementary Cup, ex-Purton striker Steve Tucker scored twice in Ardley United's 7-1 win over Worcs College Old Boys.
