WOOTTON Bassett came out 6-5 winners in a tense derby game against Swindon College Old Boys.
The game was in doubt until right until kick-off due to torrential rain and an extremely soggy Nationwide pitch.
College started the brighter of the two sides and dominated the opening exchanges, but could not convert their opportunities into points.
Former Bassett point machine Sean Millwaters missed three penalties for College, before Neil James stroked over a penalty to give Bassett the lead after 15 minutes.
Soon after, the College Old Boys' full back scored a well-worked try down the blindside to give College a 5-3 lead at half-time.
But then, just minutes after half-time, came the deciding moment of the match. College were caught offside, and James stroked over his second penalty to put Bassett 6-5 up.
The last 10 minutes were dominated by College, but their lionhearted bravery could not see them cross the try-line for a decisive touchdown, and so Bassett held on for a nail-biting victory.
