A festive carnival has become a regular Christmas cracker on Swindon's social calendar.
The growing popularity of the event is good news for both Swindon's image and prosperity.
Bernie Maguire, town centre manager, said: "We continue to provide something bigger and better each year.
"It is a wonderful atmosphere. While people are here to enjoy themselves, the event is already attracting regional visitors, which is good news for the business community," he said.
The eight thousand spectators lining the parade route cheered on those taking part. Famous characters included Snow White, Ali G and Aladdin. Sharon Kaye entered the parade as Winnie the Pooh. She was a member of the Skywalkers team.
"I think the children particularly enjoy dressing up in the costumes. Swindon is a growing place and I think we definitely need more events like this," she said.
Al Robinson enjoyed a superb view of the parade. He was a member of a stilt-walking team.
"We enjoy coming to Swindon. The crowds do seem to appreciate it," he said.
Members of the Celtic Academy for Irish Dancing also enjoyed the morning's festivities. Spokesman Patsy Moloney said: "This is the third year we have supported the carnival. The kids really look forward to it."
With the dust now settling on this year's event, thoughts are already turning to next year. The first meeting to discuss the 2001 carnival may be as early as January.
Mr Maguire hopes Swindon-based community groups will have greater involvement next year.
"Hopefully, my publicising the event that much earlier, it gives groups time to think how they would like to take part," he said.
