CARNIVAL enthusiasts are being encouraged to join next summer's massive festival event in Midsomer Norton.

With the annual carnival event over for another year, the organising committee is already planning next year's Mardi Gras on July 14.

Committee members want local people and organisations to start preparing to make the summer event as successful as this year's.

A spokesman for the Midsomer Norton and District Carnival Assoc-iation, said: "We are keen for local acts, such as school groups, drama groups and musical acts to participate.

"Age is not a barrier at all and it is hoped both young and old will be pleased to offer their services."

All applications will be screened in order to get a balanced show, but organisers say that as the show will go on for eight hours or more there is plenty of scope.

Application forms will be available from the secretary on (01761) 415334.

On Friday, awards were handed out for this year's carnival at a special presentations at Paulton Rovers club.

Three people received Awards of Merit for outstanding services to the carnival.

Two businessmen, Nigel Dando and Terry Taylor, who have had very close connections with the carnival right from its re-forming, received awards.

Collector Charlie Britten also received an award after learning that he was the highest individual collector on the carnival night.

He has been a collector in almost every carnival.

Prattens Carnival Club was awarded Best in Procession, with Mardons Carnival Club the runners-up.

Mardons won the Best Dressed Club award to add to their collection of trophies this year, which included the most sought after County Cup in the comic section.

Cheques were given to the good causes which helped with the street collection, including the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund, The Rotary Club, Peasedown St John and Midsomer Norton Scout groups and Bristol Lawmen.
