THE DANGERS of debt and Christmas borrowing are being spelled out to Bath residents as the festive season approaches.

The North East Somerset Citizens Advice Bureau has joined up with the Office of Fair Trading to try to warn people about the hazards of over-borrowing at Christmas.

Reports by the bureau suggest that consumer credit has increased by more than 60 per cent in the last year with the average debt per person, excluding mortgages, soaring to more than £2,500.

The Office of Fair Trading has launched a major campaign to stop people taking on massive financial burdens at this time of year.

The bureau has issued strong guidelines to potential borrowers in a bid to crack down on debt, including advice on shopping around for the best loan and points to consider when taking out a loan.

CAB legal services adviser Susan Perkins said that worrying trends have pointed towards an increase in debt among the younger generation.

She said: "We have noticed a marked rise in debt-related problems over recent months. Enquiries about consumer credit debt have increased by 37 per cent in the last two years.

"The number of repossessions and evictions has also gone up and there has been an increase in bankruptcy, especially among 20 to 30-year-olds.

"We want to make people aware that taking out credit can lead to debt, which in turn could result in some people losing their homes.

"At this time of year we want people to consider the consequences before they take out credit."
