CHRISTMAS shoppers are being warned to be on their guard as police re-issued warnings about the possibility of a terrorist attack in Bath.

The Avon and Somerset police began its Stay Vigilant Stay Safe campaign on November 21, as part of a crime prevention campaign.

Det Insp Gary Davies said: "We don't want to scare people, we simply want to make them aware that they need to remain on their guard against terrorism or any other crime."

The warning follows the launch of a high-profile campaign launched by the Metropolitan Police, in the aftermath of three terrorist attacks in the capital since June.

Despite the IRA ceasefire DI Davies said people should be careful.

He said: "People may well have relaxed their guard following the IRA ceasefire, but we do need the public to continue to be vigilant.

"We need people to report any suspicions they may have."

Explosive devices in the recent attacks in London, which include the rocket-propelled grenade fired at the M16 building on September 20, has resulted in advice about bags and cases.

Avon and Somerset police are asking the public to park sensibly and avoid leaving vehicles in inappropriate locations.

People should not to leave bags or parcels unattended and to report any suspicious packages to the police.

DI Davies said: "We need people to be aware of their own behaviour and that of others, to be suspicious of vehicles which are parked in inappropriate places, and to be suspicious of packages, parcels or briefcases which are left unattended."

He said that following this advice would help avoid any terrorist damage.

DI Davies said: "The quick reactions of the public have led directly to the discovery of explosive devices and played a key role in subsequent arrests."
