FAMILIES at the Swindon Women's Refuge are looking forward to a happy Christmas thanks in part to Evening Advertiser readers.

They are one of a host of community charities set to benefit in the form of cash and toys from this year's Advertiser/Rotary Christmas appeal.

The centre provides a safe haven for women who have been involved in violent relationships, offering secure accommodation to them and their children.

Our readers can donate toys or cash to the appeal, providing presents for children from unfortunate backgrounds.

Centre co-ordinator Jenni Manners said: "The people who come here are very often scarred, both emotionally and physically. The toys we receive are a massive help they benefit everybody here.

"When children are here over Christmas it's good to be able to give them some presents, often they are here for their birthday too.

"Giving them something to keep them happy not only benefits the child but it benefits the mother too, because when the children are happy the mums are happy."

The refuge offers support and safe, secure accommodation at a secret location in Swindon, and is staffed 24 hours a day.

Jenni explained:"We aren't a divorce agency we aim to support women in whatever decisions about their life they come to. What we are is a breathing space where women can come and make informed choices in a safe environment."

This is Wiltshire readers wanting to share some Christmas cheer can make donations of cash or toys to our appeal.

Last year generous readers raised over £2,000, alongside donating more than 1,000 toys.

The donations will help a range of community charities throughout Swindon.
