YOUNG BMX riders and skateboard enthusiasts who are aiming to build one of the largest indoor parks for their sport in the country, have received one of the highest awards from Youth Action Wiltshire.

It recognises the youngsters' efforts for the Shak Youth Club in Pewsey and the community in pursuing their campaign.

Chris Roberts, Ollie Spence, Michael Lown and Simon Kapuscinski, who are all pupils at Pewsey Vale School, were given the President's Cup by the Marquis of Lansdowne on Tuesday.

The award was made because of their campaign to get a huge L-shaped barn built, costing £250,000, for the covered BMX and skateboard park next to the Skak.

They were among youngsters who formed a group two years ago, now called SK8 2000. They raised money for portable ramps but now are aiming for an all-weather facility and hope to put in a Lottery bid.

Ollie Spence said the group was determined to see the project through. "We know we will have to raise a lot of money ourselves," he said.

The club now has 70 members, and the present facility is already attracting skateboarders and BMX riders from as far away as Swindon and Chippenham.

But the winning friends said they hoped the new facility would attract sports enthusiasts from farther afield.
