CRAMMER Court sheltered housing in Devizes could be demolished by Sarsen Housing Association and replaced with more modern accommodation.

Sarsen has been in consultation with elderly residents of Crammer Court, in Church Walk, for months and is expected to outline its plans for the accommodation in January 2001.

Crammer Court, which was built in the mid 1960s, has 38 units, 34 of which are currently occupied.

Sarsen spokesman Philip Mackie said: "We have formed a working group to come up with plans to improve the accommodation at Crammer Court.

"There has been a period of consultation with the tenants to look at future options.

"The target is to have something built in 2003.

"The options could be to continue with a sheltered scheme but with two-bedroom flats or more bungalows.

"Currently there is a mixture of bungalows and small bedsits. Whatever we build will be of a higher standard than what is already there."

Mr Mackie said Sarsen was reviewing all its sheltered schemes with the aim of bringing the accommodation up to date.

He said: "Older people are spending more time in their own homes with care provided to them by Social Services.

"What we have to offer in some of our homes is not up to modern expectations. People would like to have a two-bedroom flat rather than a bedsit, for example."
