A GROUP of teenagers at Everleigh, near Pewsey, who have long been complaining of being isolated without any youth facilities, have been given a boost for a project to build a youth shelter by a team of cycling policemen.

The officers, Chris Speckman, Alex McIntosh, John Davis, Sharon Friend, Paula Jones and their sergeant Paul Oatway, joined parish council chairman Andrew Connolly and representatives of Tidworth Garrison for a community challenge, to ride from Land's End to Westminster.

The effort raised more than £3,000 and the sporting policemen decided to offer the money to local youth groups.

More than 19 different groups, ranging from Scouts to Brownies, fire cadets to sports teams, schools and pre-schools, made successful bids which were accepted by a panel made up of police and Kennet district councillors.

The Everleigh teenagers were given £150 to launch their project.

On Saturday more than 150 youngsters attended a presentation of cheques at Tidworth Leisure Centre.

Sgt Oatway said: "We wanted our effort to benefit youth right across the area, so we could help as many as possible with their projects."
