A FAMILY building firm, W Liddiard (Aldbourne) Ltd, of Fortune Field, Baydon, has won through to the Master Builder of the Year national finals in London on December 5.

But the company is no stranger to the competition. In 1995 it won the national award outright.

This time the firm was nominated for its construction of a permanent cover for an ancient Roman mosaic in the grounds of the Littlecote House Hotel, near Marlborough.

Stephen Watson, who runs the hotel, nominated the firm. "They are a family firm which extol the best values of this type of operation," he said.

Liddiards was started in 1948 by William Liddiard and 32 years ago his son Maurice and his son-in-law Ian Keele took over the business.

Now Mr Keele's two sons Martin and Stephen are working with the company.

"Stephen was in charge of the joinery for the building at Littlecote so it is really a case of family continuity," Mr Keele said.

"We won the regional finals and have been entered in the final in the best new build under £1,000. I don't know whether we will have the same success as last time but I think it is quite something to have got this far again."
