A POLICE investigation has begun into the death of a three-month-old baby whose mother discovered her lifeless in her cot at her home in Southbrook, Mere.

Caroline Tait, 20, called an ambulance and paramedics tried to resuscitate baby Laura, but the little girl was pronounced dead on arrival at Salisbury District Hospital.

Laura was born on August 21 and died on November 21.

A paediatric pathologist at Oxford has been unable to determine the cause of death until further tests on the body have been made.

An inquest was opened and adjourned by Wiltshire assistant deputy coroner Nigel Brookes on Tuesday, November 28.

Det Sgt Richard Mahoney of Salisbury CID said the police were "making further inquiries on behalf of the coroner into the circumstances of Laura's death".
