THE man who shot to fame when his spectacular own goal was shown on Match of the Day, has his heart set on joining Swindon Town.
Wayne Hatswell, a defender from Moredon, has been in excellent form for Conference side Forest Green Rovers and has already attracted the interest of several Division Two clubs including this Saturday's opponents Northampton Town.
Hatswell has been a Town fan since he was a boy and says he would would relish a move to the County Ground.
"I thought I was going to have a trial for Swindon," he said. "But it fell through.
"I would have no problem moving to Northampton, but it would be even more ideal if Swindon Town came knocking."
Not many non-league footballers achieve nationwide fame, but Hatswell managed it for all the wrong reasons when he was was subjected to ridicule on MOTD after his howler in Rovers' 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Morecambe.
However, the centre half fired a perfect retort to the sniggering of Lineker, Hansen et al by blasting two goals at the right end in Rovers' 2-1 defeat of Dover last weekend.
His riposte won him a special mention on this week's MOTD, but the part-time printer has more important things on his mind than Saturday night television.
Hatswell's consistently impressive form at the back for Conference side Rovers has had Football league scouts flocking to Nailsworth.
He had a trial for Northampton reserves last week, was at Oxford last night and Bristol Rovers have also thrown their hats in the ring.
At the age of 25, Hatswell might have thought that his chance of glory in the professional game had passed, but he is eager to make the most of his belated opportunity to make his mark in the big time.
"The reserve game went really well," he said. "I am just waiting to hear from them and the other clubs involved.
"It has been an up and down couple of weeks, to say the least. I was famous for all the wrong reasons, but I redeemed myself with two goals and it was nice to get mentioned again.
"With the own goal, I tried to clear it and it came off the side of my foot and nestled in the stanchion.
"You've got to forget these things and I didn't take any notice of Match of the Day.
"Putting up with a lot of stick just made me stronger and I turned it round by playing out of my skin and scoring two goals on Saturday."
The defender is taking the long route. He stepped up two leagues to join Rovers from Cinderford Town 18 months ago after spells with Trowbridge and Witney.
He said: "I was at the Swindon Town Centre of Excellence but I slipped through the net. I've done it the hard way, but Kevin Phillips managed it at Sunderland.
"I have just improved as I have gone along and I have always wanted to be a professional."
