BY COINCIDENCE I had written a letter last week almost identical to that of Mrs Rawlings, who wrote about traffic in The Down, Trowbridge. My letter echoed her concerns, but was about conditions in The Butts, in Westbury. It seems the same problems are widespread.

Yet another pet has been killed in The Butts. The driver of the car which struck my daughter's small white and black cat, on November 16, in daylight, may care to know that she survived for four agonising days.

It would have been greatly appreciated had the driver bothered to stop and knock on any door and describe the cat; it was not known for many hours that she had been injured. Whether those hours would have saved her seems unlikely, but it would have saved hours of suffering.

The Butts has become a rat-run, with many cars travelling much too fast. Cars parked (quite properly) often obscure vision for long stretches of road, yet speed is not reduced; often there are radios blaring and attention seems elsewhere. At the junction with Studland Park one can witness drivers repeatedly cutting the corner, without any apparent slowing in speed. It was in this area the latest cat was killed.

Though I don't reside in The Butts, I am a frequent visitor and I am aware that many residents would like to see some form of traffic calming in the road. What prospect is there of sleeping policemen? I imagine very little, since several dead pets don't constitute any kind of priority. Perhaps the residents will need to wait for the proverbial child.
