A YORKSHIRE man who lost his bearings after a night out in Trowbridge town centre ended up breaking down a stranger's door, believing he had made it back to his parent's home.

Dean Holton, 23, who recently moved into his parents' home at Kings Garden, Hilperton, pleaded guilty at North West Wiltshire Magistrates court last Thursday, to criminal damage.

Amanda Sawetz, prosecuting, said after Holton had broken the lock and forced open the door, he was confronted by the bemused owner before saying "I don't live here."

She explained how Holton then said he was cold before going into the man's lounge where he took his trainers off and fell asleep.

Miss Sawetz said: "He went into the lounge and turned on the television and fell asleep on the sofa.

"He had spent the day in the King's Arms from 1pm to 11pm where he drank 10 bottles of beer and an unknown amount of Vodka and Coke.

"He remembers going to a nightclub but not much else about the evening."

Tony Bignall, defending, said Holton, who works as a machine setter, felt highly embarrassed about the situation after he woke up in police cells later that morning.

Mr Bignall said: "He didn't intend to cause any damage to property.

"He was walking home and lost his bearings and didn't know where he was. He thought he was home so forced the lock.

"He said he was shocked that he wasn't where he thought he was. Mr Holton remembered he was extremely tired and went in to the front room, took his trainers off and fell asleep."

Holton was given a 12-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £60 compensation and £55 costs.
