BAKERY clerk Winifred Upward died just hours after retiring from the Westbury job she started 40 years ago.
Mrs Upward, 91, started working for Raines Bakery part-time in 1960 and retired last Friday.
She was responsible for working out the bread orders among her many clerical tasks at the Edward Street bakery.
Stephen Pyne, who manages the bakery, said: "Mrs Upward was amazing for her age. She has been a real asset to the bakery."
Last Friday, her colleagues laid on a special celebration to mark her retirement.
Shop manager Margaret Fitch said: "We wanted to mark such an occasion of working at the age of 91 years and put on a bit of a celebration for her. She was a very popular person"
Mrs Upward said on Friday: "I enjoy my work but its time to take things a bit quieter.
"It's been a working life with cheese and bread" she joked.
Mrs Upward was preparing to live near Southampton with her son Peter.
