A magical feast of fun and entertainment helped the switch-on of the Old Town Christmas lights go with a swing.

Despite blustery, drizzly and cold conditions, more than 2,500 people packed Wood Street last night to watch Swindon Mayor Arthur Archer perform the task, aided by town crier Fred Ferris.

Swindon band Locomotion had already warmed the crowds up with a medley of famous hits and once the lights were on, further entertainment was provided.

Father Christmas paraded through Wood Street in his sleigh handing out sweets to children, while jugglers performed and Wroughton Silver Band and Swindon Male Voice Choir sang Christmas carols.

Many of the shops in Wood Street stayed open throughout the evening, providing a chance to get out of the cold or for a little Christmas shopping.

Among those attending were Swindon Council chief executive Paul Doherty, Bishop of Swindon Michael Doe and Swindon Chamber of Commerce president Sheila Maslen.

But the night was geared up for the hundreds of children there.

Harry Bromley, co-ordinator of the event for the Old Town Businesses and Professionals Association, said: "It was a tremendous success for Old Town it shows there is a real sense of community here.

"There was something for everyone to enjoy, but particularly for the children.

"I would like to thank all those businesses who contributed to the success."

The lights join up with New Town, running all the way down Victoria Road. Costing a total of £10,000 and paid for by local businesses, they also adorn Wood Street, High Street, Newport Street and Devizes Road.

Coun Archer said: "This is what Christmas is all about it's wonderful to see so many children enjoying themselves. Hopefully it's the start of a merry Christmas."

Chris Kynaston, 39, was there with wife Stella and children Elinor, 10 and Dominic, eight.

He said: "It was good entertainment and there's a good atmosphere, but we're here really for the kids to see the lights."
