The appointment of Peter Taylor and Steve McClaren as caretaker bosses of the England set-up poses more questions than it gives answers.

Peter and Steve will be in charge of the England team to face Italy in Rome next month - but what happens after that?

Nobody at the FA seems able to answer that question at this time. Taylor was 'relegated' from the FA team not that long ago after doing a good job with the Under-21's.

Peter didn't let the decision then affect him. He just got on with life and did a great job at Gillingham before moving on to Leicester City in the summer. I've known him for a while and remember playing his Southend side when I was boss at Bolton Wanderers.

Steve McClaren is a coach of the highest order - he has to be at Manchester United. He is meticulous in his preparation and should work well with Peter.

But what is needed is continuity and whilst the two of them are employed at their respective clubs, that will not happen. It will be interesting over the next couple of weeks to see who they plump for.

But I still think an Englishman should be in charge and it was the topic of a conversation I had with Barnsley boss Dave Bassett at the weekend. We agreed that there are quality English coaches around - Joe Royle, Alan Curbishley and of course Taylor. Why we need to turn to a foreigner is quite beyond me.
