In all the discussions and letters in the Advertiser there has been no mention of one important historical feature that runs through the front garden area of Swindon.
The Wilts & Berks Canal built between Abingdon and Melksham and Swindon and Latton ran through that area from Wootton Bassett and Moredon.
Today many people frequent the restored canal both in Wootton Bassett and parts of Swindon particularly the recent stretch behind Kingshill.
They recognise and enjoy its worth to the local community.
If the Front Garden is built on which looks increasingly likely Swindon Council which owns a large part and the developers who build on it should have the foresight to include the restored canal as a major feature.
Too often we see grandiose plans turned into a concrete reality. This time there is the opportunity to restore the past to improve our children's future so they can appreciate the reducing wildlife where they live.
To those who have an influence in this area, either behind the scenes or in public, I ask that they make themselves heard on this issue and not let a golden opportunity slip through our fingers as was the case for canal restoration in Swindon after the war.
