TOWN boss Andy King felt his side were full value for their victory at Northampton.

He said taking the lead had breathed new confidence into the team and provided the platform for an important win.

"It has put us back in the pack. We're at the wrong end of the table and we need to win games," said King.

The manager said it was a tremendous achievement for a side that had conceded seven goals in its last two league games and failed to find the net in either clash.

He said: "When you go one up, people tend to find that extra little yard and that little bit more desire and things go for you.

"I thought the back four coped well and we kept a clean sheet against a difficult side. We tried to play football and in the end we had a couple of breakaways and could have got two or three."

The manager's decision to abandon his 5-3-2 system in favour of a five-strong midfield paid off.

"I said I would change it. I thought all week about what was going wrong. I wanted a clean sheet and all the battling qualities, passion, desire and effort that I just think go with football."

Although delighted with the win, the Town boss was not totally satisfied.

"It was a clean sheet with part quality. I wouldn't say it was a great quality performance. I thought we deserved more than a 1-0 score though. They never threatened us in open play," he said.

King said he had demanded a quality performance from his players as a retort to the chairman's criticism earlier in the week.

"I said let's go out and prove it. He's sitting away on holiday sunnying himself, so let's show him. This performance has shown him that there is that commitment in the club and the players want it."

King joked that Terry Brady should not try and take the credit for the victory as well as enjoying his holiday.

"His comments were quite apt and the players have gone out and given everything he asked for," said the Town boss.

King said he had told the players to relax before the game.

"I'm the only one with the pressure. I told them to go out and play football," he said.

He was also delighted the team had finally enjoyed the rub of the green at last.

"There were a couple of occasions where the ball's bounced off them for a goal kick, when before it might have gone for a corner and put us under more pressure," he said.

With the goal, he was delighted with the way his players had been in the right areas to cause damage.

"When the ball came back off the keeper it was two of our players who picked the second ball up. Last week and in the game against Peterborough, we'd have been 30 yards behind the play," he said.

King repeated his belief that Town's players were better then their current league position suggested.

"This squad is good enough to do better than the position they're in. To go and achieve further it may need new bodies but this team is still capable of winning games," he said.

King said he would continue his search for quality players but signings would not be made simply for the sake of bringing in a new face.

"The type I want are not easy to find. I want better players. These are good players so of course the ones I bring in will have to be better," said the Town chief.
