Further to the recent decision made by Swindon Borough Council to proceed with the development of the Front Garden, I write to express my amazement and disgust at the action or indeed lack of action from the three Conservative elected members for Highworth, two of whom were absent on the night, the other choosing to abstain.
The non participation in the vote by Councillors Arkell, Duff and Hawkes effectively disenfranchised the electorate of Highworth (circa 6,000) from having any say whatsoever in perhaps the biggest decision Swindon has made since becoming a unitary authority.
Not one of the same three councillors could be found in attendance at the monthly full meeting of Highworth Town council on November 28 to answer questions as to their non participation in the Front Garden vote.
Why should Highworth be treated with such disdain by its duly elected representatives? Are these people not up to the job they were elected to do?
Do they really care about Highworth? All of these are questions that I am sure the people of Highworth will ask when elections come round again.
These same people have long memories and will not forget the way their councillors chose to serve them in November 2000. Actions speak louder than words and there were very few words from Councillors Arkell, Duff and Hawkes on such a crucial issue. Ladies beware of the ballot box next time round!
