I REFER to the recent council decision on concessionary travel. The opposition parties at Swindon Borough Council are to be congratulated for having the sense to listen to public opinion.

This is a scheme which is valued by a substantial number of the borough's pensioners. Instead of restricting the use of this service, the council in line with other authorities should be improving it by increasing the allowance and allowing a wider range of travel.

The Labour group which has traditionally claimed to be the pensioner's friend has certainly proved the opposite on this issue and deserves to lose a substantial number of votes at the next local election.

Today's pensioners represent the people who defended and fought for this country during the last world war. They have ensured that there is a democratic process without which Swindon Borough Council would not exist.

It is to be hoped that Mr Avenell and his supporters keep the pressure on Swindon Borough Council and get the concessions they deserve.
