THOUSANDS of people flocked to Midsomer Norton for a spectacular fair and Christmas lights switch-on.
Organisers were delighted that about 10,000 people turned out for the event, now in its second year.
Midsomer Norton Traders' Association chairman Mike Grinsted said the event attracted record numbers to the town.
He said: "We are talking about half of the population of Midsomer Norton and, considering that the event clashed with similar occasions in Radstock and Frome, I think we did pretty well."
Among the evening's highlights were four Scottish reindeer pulling Father Christmas on a sleigh through the High Street.
Mike Grinsted said: "There were six reindeer in all, four to pull Santa and two babies just walking along."
The evening began at 7pm when town crier Adrian Dando announced the start of the proceedings.
The Midsomer Norton marching brass band and the Midsomer Norton majorettes joined Santa on his way through the town.
Wansdyke MP Dan Norris switched the Christmas lights on during the evening and personalities from HTV West and Bath FM entertained the crowds.
Fairground rides and fire jugglers were amongst the entertainment.
Mr Grinsted said the event was successful because of the family theme.
He said: "The executive committee of the town traders felt we were losing sight of what traditionally is Christmas. It's about children and reliving your dreams, being able to drop a note on Santa's lap and see him in person.
"The last two years have been a confirmation that our theme is what the public want.
"Historically it is an opportunity for people to meet friends who they haven't seen for a few months."
The evening was organised by traders to thank the public for their support, said Mr Grinsted.
