The RSPCA is appealing to people across the region to help raise the £500,000 needed for rebuilding work at the Bath Cats and Dogs' home.
The animal home was built in 1939 and is now in need of major refurbishment.
During the Christmas period, the RSPCA holds an annual pet food appeal and this year is encouraging people to also give small donations.
Chris Doveton-Gerty, general manager of the home, said: "There are many ways people can support us, and we are grateful for all contributions towards the appeal however big or small."
The aim is that the new centre, which will be finished by the end of 2001, will include new kennel blocks, a cattery, car park, reception and vet facilities.
