TEACHERS and councillors have paid tribute Ted Cooper, a leading figure in the life of Calne, who died last week at the age of 88.

Mr Cooper was a town councillor for many years and mayor from 1982 to 1983.

With his late wife Louise, he was a governor of John Bentley School for many years, and he later became chairman of governors.

John Bentley School head teacher Anne Burrell, who attended his funeral at St Edmund's Church, paid tribute to the years of service he gave to Calne as a governor, councillor and town mayor.

"Ted's life was one of service first in the Royal Air Force, before, during and after the Second World War, and then to the community," she said.

"On his retirement at the age of 55, Ted began on what was to be a significant contribution to Calne in so many ways.

"He was an example to us all and his life will certainly have left the world a much better place."

Town mayor Eric Porter, who also attended the funeral with many of the present councillors, said: "It is a sad loss to the town. In every way Ted represented what is best in public service.

"He was a dedicated man who gave a lot to his family and to the town."

At the funeral Father Michael Robertson said: "The first time I visited him I came away after two hours, though it seemed I'd been there for 30 minutes.

"His enthusiasm and humour were immensely stimulating and ever since Ted died there has been a gap in our lives."

Father Robertson said he would remember Mr Cooper's generosity and his involvement with the local community.

"Even when he couldn't get around he continued to give of himself. Discomfort or pain seemed to present no barrier to him and he was determined to use all that God had given him to the full by sharing it with others."
