KINDHEARTED girls from St Mary's School have brightened up six venues in Calne by donating and decorating Christmas trees.

Students from the Calne school raised money for Christmas lights and decorations through a number of fundraising events, including a non-uniform day and a cake sale.

The trees were donated by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, who lives at Charlton Park near Malmesbury, and has a daughter at the school.

On Saturday December 2, the trees were taken to elderly residents at Marden Court, The Wharf, James House and Dunstan House residential homes for the elderly.

Trees also went to the children's section of Calne Library and the NSPCC Family Centre at Broken Cross.

At Dunstan House the girls met Calne's oldest resident, 100-year-old Bert Hardy.

The home's matron Marion Mepstead said: "The residents are really thrilled.

"It looks beautiful and we have put it in the main lounge so everyone can see it.

"The girls delivered it and decorated it here and we are all very grateful to them."

Teacher and charities co-ordinator Helen Stokes said: "The girls enjoyed this oppotunity to show their commitment to the local community at this festive time of year."
