POLICE are appealing for information after a man in his early 30s frightened two teenagers in Wootton Bassett.

Sergeant Richard Guy said a 13-year-old boy was walking home from school along Swindon Road, near Longleaze, on Friday December 1 at about 3.45pm when a man drove past in a dirty white Citroen diesel and made eye contact.

The car was travelling from the Coped Hall roundabout towards the town centre.

The man maintained the eye contact for a prolonged period, causing the boy to feel uncomfortable, said Sgt Guy.

The driver then stopped, got out of the car and walked towards the boy, beckoning to him to come closer.

The boy shouted at him to go away, at which the man ran back to his car and drove off. Sgt Guy said: "The boy did the right thing."

The boy told police the man was white, about six foot, slim, with short receding hair and a protruding jaw. He was dressed in a mustard-coloured shirt, a blue tie and black trousers.

Sgt Guy said a man fitting the same description later approached a girl standing at the bus-stop near the Shell Garage. The girl, who was wearing a hooded jacket, ran away through an alleyway towards The Rosary.

Sgt Guy said: "We don't know at this stage what the man's motive was, but the teenagers perceived a safety issue."

Several witnesses have already come forward in connection with the incidents, but police are appealing for more information. They also want to contact the girl at the bus stop. Anyone who can help should ring Wootton Bassett police on (01793) 852213.
