YOUNG members of Watch, the junior section of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, descended on Urchfont Manor College on Sunday December 3 dressed as members of the insect kingdom.
The Ugly Bug Ball was part of a project funded by the Year of the Artist in which local artist Julianne Worrall-Hood worked with members of the Devizes Watch group to put art into a natural context.
She worked with 22 members to make insect costumes out of willow and other natural materials to explore techniques of working with willow.
It is the first step to creating a giant willow sculpture in a glade in the recently planted new copse at Oakfrith Wood, part of the estate of Urchfont Manor owned by Wiltshire County Council.
Local architect Mark Ellerby has been working with the Watch group on the project and is delighted with progress so far.
He said: "Sunday's event was a great success. The children enjoyed themselves immensely, playing games and eating food decorated with beetles and other insect designs."
Another part of the £7,000 project is to create a woodland map using natural materials. It will join the costumes from Sunday's Ugly Bug Ball in an exhibition to be mounted in May.
