THE first Victorian evening in Aldbourne, which saw Carnival Queen Stacey Pattemore switching on the lights on the village Christmas tree, was a big success with about 400 attending.
The village took the opportunity to make the best of a window of dry, clear weather after almost continuous rain in the days leading up to the festival on Saturday, said John Gasking, the carnival committee spokesman.
Thanks to sponsorship there were numerous activities for people to watch or join in. Earthline sponsored a traditional Punch and Judy show; W. Liddiard, builders, sponsored a barbecue which was so popular that extra supplies had to be brought in; Peter Stirland, Hungerford Garage and the Blue Boar pub sponsored other activities, and a marquee was loaned by Covered Occasions Marquees.
The WI choristers were accompanied by the Aldbourne Band and there were children's traditional fairground rides provided by Edwards' Amusements, with swing boats, a carousel, coconut shy and shooting gallery. The Aldbourne Light Entertainment Company members acted as strolling players.
