MY previous letter on the notice to quit the allotments, in which I addressed the problem as being praiseworthy for Calne Town Council, has since been nullified by the council's behaviour towards the allotment holders.

It stated in its letter: "The enclosed notice to quit is being served now, with an expiry date of 6 April 2001. If for any reason the proposed alternative sites are not suitable, or are delayed, then you will continue to remain at Newcroft, rent free, until the sites are ready or other sites are found. There is no intention to sell Newcroft and not provide an alternative site."

The alternative sites have been shown to be unacceptable. The council now refuses to discuss the problem because members walked out of a meeting when it was shown to them that they had renegaged on their letter quoted above. Arrogant behaviour of this manner leaves me pondering the question, in whom can we trust when given the written word?

The council is trying to ride roughshod over us in the vain hope that we will capitulate our tenancies and leave the area open for development, but I feel justice should be recognised. A new site should be allocated within their own criteria set forth in their notice

Let us hope that commonsense will prevail and both parties reach an amicable solution to a vexed question of where next.
