FOR the second year Marlborough Chamber of Commerce have shot themselves in the foot by allowing the Victorian Evening to degenerate into a mini mop fair.

People are already staying away because most of the really charming old world touches have been drowned in the flood of cheap modern tat and commercialism.

Even the helter-skelter for distressingly modern and tacky.

What has a Joanna Lumley lookalike to do with a Victorian street scene?

It would be very insulting to suggest that the lady herself has been around that long.

May I suggest that next year the Chamber of Commerce police all entrances to the town and prevent any inappropriate fairground rides and side-shows, hot dog stalls, discos, from hi-jacking our evening.

There is a steam fair which has been touring the country for many years and now is the time to book it for next year.

Please just give us back our victorian evening.
