TRADERS in Bradford on Avon have said enough is enough and are calling for an end to roadworks which have been holding up town centre traffic for months.

Shops have also suffered since the severe flooding split the town in two and gave motorists and shoppers another reason to avoid the centre.

Malcolm Tillion, of Tillions in The Shambles, said businesses have already suffered a lot this year and it would not take much more before some businesses are forced under.

Mr Tillion said: "At the very least they could leave the town for the Christmas season. We have had to suffer roadworks on top of the flooding. Nobody seems to care. We are extremely annoyed and frustrated.

"If you talk to anyone in Bradford, you will get the same reaction we are sick to death of it."

Bradford Chamber of Commerce was upset when gas company Transco failed to remove traffic lights from the town centre in time for the Christmas lights switch-on.

Those works had been delayed to miss the summer tourist season after complaints from the town council and chamber of commerce.

Chamber president Alison James said: "December is a vital month for a lot of our shops and we want to give them the opportunity to make the most of Christmas trading to make up for the problems with this awful weather."

Transco said the current roadworks in the town centre have stopped except for the one-way section of St Margaret's Street, which has been closed.
