A NUMBER of fatal road accidents have led the fire and ambulance services and police to join forces at a special safety event, to be held on Saturday, December 9.

The event was sparked after serious accidents on the A350 and one at Westbury.

Trowbridge firefighter Denver Walton said: "There were fatal road traffic accidents on the A350 and one at Westbury, where Andrew Wheeler died.

"A lot of us who knew him thought 'Is there anything we can do?' "

"We do community fire safety, so thought we could do road safety and decided to involve the ambulance and fire services and police."

Tomorrow, from 9am to 4pm, there will be police, fire and ambulance crews in Fore Street, Trowbridge, with a wrecked car which had been involved in an accident.

Mr Walton said they hoped drivers would heed the message.

"We're saying, 'We can get you out, we can help you, but we'd rather stop accidents happening', " he said.

Police will be there with a patrol car offering to breathalyse people who have had a drink the night before to see how they fare on the reading.

Firefighters will be on hand to speak to people and hand out leaflets with the emergency support unit and there will also be an ambulance and paramedics present.
