Wroughton failed to avenge their Addkey Senior Cup defeat by Shrewton United when the league leaders ran out winners 3-0 at the Weir Field to complete a quickfire league and cup double. United's victory enabled them to go six points clear at the top of the Premier Division.
United took the lead on 15 minutes with a well worked move finished off by Dean Foot. For the rest of the half Wroughton were in command and missed chance after chance.
After the break Wroughton continued to push forward looking for an equaliser and Shrewton's Micky Ball broke free on the right and his cross was knocked over the line by Rick Casey.
Shortly after United added a third when a good left wing cross from Chris Withers was converted by Anton Brownless.
Wroughton never gave up and the visitors' keeper Adam Burwell made sure his side kept a clean sheet with some good stops in the closing stages.
In an excellent game at Marlborough Devizes Town Reserves snatched victory by 4-3 with a hotly disputed penalty ten minutes from time. Earlier in the game play switched from end to end with Ian McKay, Richard Jackson and Steve Dene on target for the home side and Nathan Sheridan (2), Alan Webster and an Andy Davies penalty for the visitors.
In the bottom of the table clash at Aldbourne the home side beat Warminster Town Reserves 4-2 to register their first victory of the season at their tenth attempt.
Warminster held a 1-0 lead at the break through Richard Hudson but a revitalised Aldbourne came out after the break with Nick O'Dwyer completing a hat-trick and Mark Barnett also getting his name on the scoresheet, Hudson adding a second for the visitors in the last minute.
In the Addkey Senior Cup a strong Corsham Town Reserves side gained a 4-0 away success against Cricklade Town, Dale Townsend bagging a hat-trick and club stalwart John Freeguard adding a fourth. Westbury United Reserves lost 4-2 at home to Stratton Crosslink with the visitors' top marksman Gerry Wright grabbing a hat-trick and Steve Shaw the other. Two up at the break Crosslink lost Kevin Iles who was sent off five minutes into the second half and sparked a brief revival by the home side who pulled a goal back but the visitors added two more to run out comfortable winners.
Top game in the Intermediate section was between league leaders Blunsdon United and second placed Zarlink with victory eventually going to Zarlink 5-2.
Steve Webb opened the scoring for Zarlink followed by a second from Sean Freeman. Blunsdon fought back and pulled a goal back just before the break through Craig Green. Mark Connolly made it 3-1 with a left foot curler but back came United to add a second with a header from Justin Pearson.
Blunsdon then pressed the self destruct button and lost Mark Gunter and Craig Green who were both sent off, leaving the home side to add two more goals through Connolly and a penalty from Jamie Ashby.
In the same section Martin Curtis scored four times for Ashton Keynes in their 5-1 win at Calne, Matthew Charlton scoring the fifth and Ewen Munroe for Calne.
Castrol narrowly beat Down Ampney 3-2, Errol Johnson and Darren Herbert scoring for the home side and Nick Camden (2) and Craig Ingram who scored the winner five minutes from time for Castrol.
Goals from Paul Baverstock and stalwart Darren Jell gave Stratton Crosslink a 2-1 success over Biddestone Reserves and Sherston and Dunbar Westside shared the points in a 1-1 draw, Geoff Swatton for Dunbar and Mike Ward for Shrewton.
Swindon Eagles preserved their 100 per cent record in the Junior Division beating Sporting HKQ 3-2. Sporting led 2-0 at the break through Ian McCarthy and Roger Hales and with Eagles Richard Purcell sent off five minutes before the break, it looked as though they was about to cause an upset. However goals from Dave Levitt, Jordan Barnett and Wayne Petrie preserved the Eagles 100 per cent record from seven games.
