ROY EVANS felt Town could have no complaints after their thrashing at Saltergate and said the attitude of his side left much to be desired on the day.

The club's director of football was not impressed with his players and let them know in no uncertain terms.

Evans refused to point the finger at individuals and said the whole team shouldered responsibility for such an abject display.

He said: "It was a poor performance. I thought we started the game reasonably well and created a few chances but we can have no complaints about the result at all.

"Well done to Chesterfield but obviously I'm not over-pleased with our display.

"We praise them as a team when they do well and we criticise them as a team when they do badly.

"All aspects of our game were poor.

"Our passing was poor and our defending was poor.

"You don't get all aspects of your game right in every match but unfortunately for us, we were not good in every department in the same match."

Evans felt Town's approach to the game had been right and the early stages had suggested the visitors' were confident of going on to win the game.

He said: "I felt we should have gone on and taken the initiative after the promising start but we failed to do that and you have to give Chesterfield the credit for going on to win the game pretty convincingly."

Evans was disappointed that Town could find nothing in the tank to respond after falling behind to David Reeves' 47th minute header.

He said: "To be fair, I have described the lads' character as different class and I have not been able to fault their attitude. But we were simply not at the races after the first 20 minutes against Chesterfield.

"I'm not saying that we didn't try, it's just the application and our brightness wasn't there.

"We looked less and less threatening as the game went on.

"Our build up to the game was no different but our attitude let us down in the end and that's very unusual."

Evans said the dressing room had not been a happy place at full time but the players were well aware that they had under-performed.

"You make your point as a coach after a performance like that. Whether you make it fiercely or quietly doesn't really matter as long as what you're saying gets through."

He said: "They know they can do much, much better and we will sit down and have a chat about it and then look forward to the next game.

"That's the great thing about football.

"You get a chance to redeem yourselves. Our chance comes very quickly with another match on Tuesday night."
