DANNY INVINCIBLE is adamant his season will not fall apart after turning from last-gasp hero to stoppage-time villain.
The 22-year-old ensured his place in the County Ground hall of fame with last season's dramatic goal against Peterborough but Saturday's penalty miss in the 1-0 defeat at Blackpool was more like an application for the hall of shame.
He said: "I am more annoyed than anyone could imagine. There's probably people cursing me but they don't feel it like I do."
But the Aussie is not the sort of player to dissolve in a quivering heap after a setback. He endured his fair share of criticism last season from a variety of sources.
Some fans questioned whether he had the mental strength to cope with the rigours of Division Two or if he had the bottle to get stuck in when the going got tough.
Invincible shrugged off the criticism and never lost faith in his own ability. He insists that belief will not be shaken by one penalty miss, albeit a crucial last minute one.
He said: "You have to learn from these things.
"I scored with one 90th minute chance that people still talk about.
"I had another chance to score a last minute goal against Blackpool, some would say a much easier chance, but it wasn't to be."
The footballing manuals always tell the aspiring player 'never change your mind' once you've decided where to place a penalty.
Invincible ignored the advice but at least had the comfort of knowing he had had the nerve to step forward.
Far from being 'volunteered' on Saturday, the former Marconi Stallions man grabbed the ball and placed it on the spot.
He said: "Razor asked me if I was okay to take it. I said 'Yeah, no worries'. I wouldn't have taken it if I didn't have confidence in myself to score.
"But I'll bounce back and the team will bounce back. There's a lot of character at the club.
"We just have to put the disappointment behind us and get on with the job."
None of Invincible's team mates were left pointing the finger at the Australian and director of football Roy Evans said while it wasn't the best penalty he had ever seen taken, he couldn't question Invincible's courage in volunteering to take it.
Evans said: "It was a spontaneous decision. We haven't a regular penalty taker with Keith O'Halloran out. Danny's stepped up and I think you have to give a bit of credit to their keeper for the save."
Town's reserves are in action at Cambridge United this afternoon (kick off 2pm).
