On Friday, November 9, the Wiltshire Times & Chippenham News launched a campaign to put a stop to fly tipping across west and north Wiltshire.

We are asking our readers to let us know about any examples of illegal tipping so we can help bring those responsible to justice.

We, like the vast majority of people across west and north Wiltshire are sick and tired of the anti-social behaviour of a mindless few, too lazy to get rid of their rubbish at the tips, and prepared to turn our lanes into rubbish dumps.

We launch our campaign with the shocking claim that a man offered to take a van load of rubbish to the tip for £20 and then dumped it in a country lane.

People living in Drynham Lane in Trowbridge have had enough of their lane being used as a tip, and were furious when rubbish, including broken kitchen cupboards, a highchair, sofa, and microwave oven, were strewn across the lane.

John Baker, of Drynham Lodge, said: "We are totally fed up with it. The people who do this wouldn't like to have all this dumped on their doorsteps, so why should we have to put up with it?

"The person who dumped this had to have driven here, so why could he not drive to the tip instead? Surely he could have driven to Warminster and got rid of it legally. These people just don't think about anyone else."

Mr Baker said the lane was constantly used as a tip because it is out of the way.

He said: "It is a lovely lane and a favourite walk for people who live around here. A bit further down there are about 20 bales of rotting straw with black stuff oozing out into the brook."

Papers found in the rubbish dumped in the lane on Saturday included phone bills for Nicky Mould, of Longfield Road, Trowbridge.

They have now been passed to West Wiltshire District Council's legal department which is considering prosecuting.

But, although Mr Mould does not deny the rubbish is his, he claims he paid a man in a pub £20 to get rid of it for him.

He said: "I was in JD Wetherspoon in Trowbridge saying to my mates that I needed to get some stuff to the tip. This bloke came up to me and said he had a van and would take my stuff to the tip for £20.

"One of my mates usually goes for me as I haven't got any transport but he's away in Liverpool."

Mr Mould said he did not know the man and was concerned about giving him his address.

He said: "He said he could be round in half an hour so I gave him £20. The first I heard the rubbish had been dumped in the lane was when the Wiltshire Times phoned me.

"If I was going to dump it there is no way I would be stupid enough to leave a load of my stuff in a lane with my name and address on it."

He said: "I've got some more stuff but I'm going to wait until my friend gets back from Liverpool."

The rubbish in Drynham Lane has been cleared by West Wiltshire District Council.

Council spokesman Louise Knox said: "Tipping is a big problem and it is certainly the wish of our cleansing department that we make a prosecution if we can.

"Our legal department is now evaluating the evidence to see if there is a case for the Crown Prosecution Service to accept. We are very keen to pursue a prosecution."
