SWINDON council says it has met a government challenge to create more imaginative places to live.
In response to last month's government advice to local authorities and developers to think more imaginatively about design and layout, council environmental services staff have published a 190-page guide on good urban design.
Two years' work with developers on the development to the north of the town has resulted in Swindon producing ground-breaking guidance on the design of residential roads.
Simon Birch, Swindon's director of environmental services, said: "We've reacted quickly to the government's recommendation to produce information we expect developers to follow.
"This document is a clear message that developers can build here in a holistic way that will be held up nationally as an example of excellence."
The council's Transport Requirements for Development has been published in response to the government's Better Places to Live A Companion Guide to PPG2.
Copies at a cost of £55 are available from: Transport Planning Group, Environmen-tal Services, Swindon Council, Premier House, Station Road, Swindon SN1 1TZ. Tel: 01793 466362.
