Following Tony Griffiths' letter on this subject (EA, October 29), I remember when Junction 16 was widened, resurfaced and the traffic lanes newly painted.
It took me all of two seconds to predict that the abbreviation W'TON on the lane for Wroughton could, and would, be misconstrued as W(oot)TON for Wootton Bassett, especially by the many drivers from outside the area. This appears to be the case.
I cannot believe that this possibility did not occur to any of the committee who decide these things.
So, what letters (for clarity's sake) does Wroughton have that Wootton doesn't? An R and a G. So how about repainting that lane as either WR'TN or WR'GN. Maybe also M4(E), B4005, A3102 and M4(W) on the lanes would further improve the situation. These markings need to be both on the roundabout AND before it.
It's not rocket science, after all!
