SCREWFIX DIRECT LEAGUE: CORSHAM Town moved into their highest ever Screwfix Direct League position with a comfortable victory at lowly Wellington on Saturday 10 November.
In-form strike duo John Freegard and Matt Pratley both scored second half goals as the Southbank outfit climbed to fourth place in the First Division table.
The visitors, who went into the game looking to extend a nine-match unbeaten run, faced stern resistance from a physical Wellington outfit in the first period.
Pratley had the ball in the net in the first half, but saw his effort ruled out for an infringement, before Freegard connected with a Rob Humphries cross to give Corsham a deserved lead 12 minutes after the restart.
The visitors put the game beyond Wellington in spectacular fashion on 65 minutes when Pratley lashed home a dipping 25-yard half volley to double the Corsham advantage.
Mark Godley's side might have extended their lead with a series of half chances late on and were rarely troubled by their struggling hosts in the closing stages.
Godley, who narrowly missed out on winning the Screwfix Direct League's Manager of the Month award for October, felt his side were well worth their victory.
He said: "Wellington is by no means an easy place to go and get a result. It is a poor pitch and the players don't always look forward to going there.
"To be fair to the boys, we went there, did a job, and came away with the three points.
"They tried to intimidate us a bit in the first half and were very physical. But we got the ball down and played in the second half and had a 25-minute purple patch in which we scored the two goals.
"I was delighted and it moves us into fourth place. That's the highest we've been, I think, and I'd like to stay there. We're more than capable."
Godley has been particularly impressed with the form of his defensive unit in recent weeks, but also paid tribute to strikers Freegard and Pratley for their contribution.
He said: "Out of the last ten games, I think we've had six clean sheets. We have got about the fifth lowest goals for total in the league, but my strikers have a good partnership and are scoring goals.
"I was really pleased for John on Saturday. He looked as though he was enjoying himself."
Corsham are at home to Shepton Mallet on Saturday and lie just two points ahead of the First Division newcomers in the league table.
Said Godley: "The reports I've got on them say they are a very similar side to us. They are compact and work hard for each other and it will all be about who decides they want it the most on the day.
"If we work hard enough then there's no reason we can't win. But it isn't going to be easy, that's for sure."
