A WILTSHIRE team composed entirely of Swindon players came sixth in the national under-14 team chess championships in Stoke.
Four of the town's junior internationalists, Liden's Richard Webb, 14, Old Town brothers Joshua, 13, and Daniel Hall, 11, and Nicola Thomas, 11, of Wroughton, were in action for the team, with Daniel and Nicola along with Alastair Drew, all unbeaten with 21/2 points from their three games.
Another Swindon player, 10-year-old Lewis Martin of Westlea, took his first step towards international recognition when a score of three out of five at the English Under 11 Championships in Bedford earned him a "half norm" towards a place in this year's England under 11 trial. Another similar strong performance is all he now needs to qualify for the trial.
