A 14-YEAR-old girl braved a kitchen fire at her home yesterday to save her trapped Labrador puppy.
Tracey Donnelly smelt smoke at her home in West View Crescent at about 10am and went to investigate. She found the kitchen in flames and her 19-week-old puppy Harley collapsed on the floor.
She dragged him clear and took him outside. Paramedics from Wiltshire Ambulance Service gave the dog oxygen and before they left he was on his feet again, his tail wagging.
It is thought Harley may have been the cause of the blaze that gutted the ground floor room and filled the rest of the house with smoke.
Tracey's father, Michael, said: "We think the puppy jumped up and knocked over the toaster which might have shorted out and set fire to the curtains. It's a real mess, but at least no- one was hurt and the dog seems to have recovered."
Tracey said: "I don't know what I would have done if anything had happened to Harley. I've not had him long but he is lovely. I just didn't think about anything but getting him out of there."
Julian Beinhorn of Wiltshire Fire Brigade said the fire was well alight when crews arrived, with flames coming through the window. Smoke could be seen coming from the roof.
It is the second fire at the house. Four years ago a candle set fire to a wall hanging in an upstairs bedroom but little damage was done.
Sarsen Housing Association said it would give the family as much support as possible. A spokesman said: "In cases like this the family usually likes to stay in the house if it is at all possible."
