SALISBURY is nearer to having a new courthouse, following a proposal to shut magistrates' courts at Trowbridge and Devizes.
Wiltshire Magistrates' Court Committee pressed for the closures at its meeting last week.
"We hope this will bring it closer for Salisbury to have a new court," said Paul Wilcock, Salisbury Justices' chief executive.
Salisbury Crown Court is in New Street, with magistrates sitting in the Guildhall. But a new magistrates' court is earmarked for a site in Wilton Road.
"It would be just about big enough for a three-room courthouse, which is what we want," said Mr Wilcock, who added that costs would be in the area of £1 million per courtroom.
