RESIDENTS in Alderbury are on the march to fight more house building on their doorstep.
Fierce opposition has been expressed to plans by the Longford Estate to build 80 homes near Oakwood Grove, off the old Southampton Road.
Villagers say the plans are a slippery slope towards destroying the rural character of Alderbury and turning it into an urban suburb of Salisbury.
They queued up to express their concern at a packed meeting of more than 140 residents, held in the primary school hall last week.
The public meeting was organised by the parish council to hear the opinions of the local community before they decided on an agreed view.
Parish chairman Richard Britton was left in no doubt as to the feeling of most villagers.
"This meeting was not called to promote a particular opinion," he said.
"But it was clear that villagers overwhelmingly wanted the parish council to oppose any large-scale development of Alderbury."
