THIS YEAR'S firework display at Swindon's Polo Ground raised a record £16,000 for charity, according to organisers Swindon Lions Club.

The November 3 show attracted more than 7,000 spectators and beat last year's takings by £3,000.

The record-breaking haul means local charities could be in for a good year, as most of the profits from the show traditionally go to Swindon causes.

Last year, Swindon Women's Refuge received £2,000 from the Lions Club, while the Swindon Therapy Centre and summer play scheme SPLASH also benefited.

International charities, such as the Lions' favoured Indian eye clinic appeal, could also be in line for a generous donation.

Lions spokesman, John Austin, said club members were delighted at the sum they had helped raise.

"We are delighted to provide entertainment to so many people at the same time as raising £16,000 for so many good causes," he said.

"Thank you to the people of Swindon for helping us in this way."
