Swindon Women's Refuge, PO Box 144, Swindon, 536447. Takes in between 200 and 250 women and around 300 children a year. Many of the women fleeing violent homes arrive with little more than the clothes they are wearing. There is rarely time to pack essentials, let alone toys for their children. The refuge provides 24-hour advice, counselling and accommodation at a secret location.
West Swindon Family Project, 15 Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook, Swindon, SN5 8PD, 871303. Offers help, advice and support to families living in West Swindon, specifically to families with children under five. Many families are on income support and the toys will be given to children who might not otherwise find much in their stocking.
Brimble Hill Special School, Lyndhurst Crescent, Park North, Swindon, SN3 2RW, 617426. For children with severe learning difficulties.
The Welcome Centre, Lyndhurst Crescent, Park North, Swindon, SN3 2RW, 486806. A community-based family support project which offers information, education and social contact for young families who may be facing difficulties. Issues include health problems, relationships or domestic violence.
Homestart, 7 Milton Road, Swindon, 613886. A voluntary home-visiting scheme offering friendship and support to families with at least one child under the age of five. Many of the parents are single and on income support.
The Otters Group, based at the Hydrotherapy pool, Jeffries Avenue, Gorse Hill, 496220. Young children with disabilities aged four to 11. They meet every fortnight at the Thamesdown Hydrotherapy pool.
Uplands Special School, Leigh Road, Penhill, 724751. Caters for 70 children of secondary school age with severe learning disabilities, ranging from autism to Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties.
Walcot Family Centre, Bothwell Road, Walcot, 693669. A place for attending groups, learning new skills, gaining support, making new friends and relaxing.
