ROY EVANS will drill it into his players that they must not become another cup scalp for Hereford United.

Town's reward for beating Hartlepool United on Saturday is a home tie with the non-League giant-killers.

The Conference side dumped Wrexham out of the cup at Edgar Street in yesterday's televised tie and will travel to the County Ground for a second-round contest on Saturday, December 8.

Town's director of football watched the match. ironically to check up on Wrexham who visit Wiltshire next Tuesday, but ended up getting a sneak preview of his next cup opponents.

He said: "Everyone knows what Hereford have achieved in the FA Cup over the years.

"We have to make sure that we don't become another of their victims.

"But they played well to beat Wrexham and we will have to make sure our preparation is absolutely right."

Evans said once you stepped back from the 'hype', Town had to see the match as a great chance to progress.

He said: "We are at home to a non-league club. You have to be fairly happy with that.

"But Hartlepool showed that lower league does not mean easy victory."

While Evans is only concerned with the present, the tie provides a chance to reminisce.

Gareth Davies started his career at Edgar Street, while Steve Cowe (who helped Newport force a creditable draw at Blackpool on Saturday) was loaned out to Hereford while a Town player.

But the man with the strongest link is Steve White.

Chalky enjoyed a distinguished career with Town before moving on to Hereford.

The two sides last met in 1995 in an Auto Windscreens Shield tie at the County Ground. in 1995.

Hereford won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Steve White!
