I AM writing on behalf of Swindon Film Society to complain about projection facilities at the Arts Centre and to bring to the council's attention that, during the proposed refurbishment of the building, they must invest in the equipment inside the building as well as the exterior.
We show films there on Wednesday evenings (16 films per season from September to April) and this year we have had numerous problems with the operation of the ageing film projector.
Recently the projector broke down completely and, unfortunately, our highly competent projectionists were unable to fix it.
Consequently we were unable to show the film and the audience, comprising about 100 people, were very patient but, in the end, we had to send them home!
What are we to do during the remainder of the season?
What about the Arts Centre's own films?
A total of about 60 films are shown there per year and it is the only venue suitable for this purpose.
I understand that funds from the sale of the adjacent car park are financing the refurbishing of the building but that little is being spent on new equipment.
Why won't the council invest in a new projector instead of concentrating solely in a new exterior and box-office.
Don't they want to maintain it as a film venue?
Don't they want to organise any more film festivals?
The society has used the Arts Centre since it opened 40-odd years ago and our 300 members are very loyal indeed.
I write on their behalf to express our collective disappointment and concern with the council's plans for this ever-popular Old Town venue.
How many more films will be abandoned before the projector is replaced?
